Made in America Road Closures and SEPTA; Reward for Girl's Shooter 50k; New Canal Gets More to PHL

Labor Day weekend is coming and that means the annual Made in America concert in Philadelphia. Road closures for the event - Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 4 - on the Ben Franklin Parkway are already underway and will continue through Tuesday, Sept. 6. This is the schedule, according to the mayor's office, followed by SEPTA information:

Sunday, Aug. 28: Two lanes of Eakins Oval in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum will be closed as needed starting at 7am. This closure will continue, as necessary, through 11:59pm Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Monday, Aug. 29: Spring Garden Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Benjamin Franklin Parkway will be closed starting at 7am. This closure will continue through 5am on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Tuesday, Aug. 30: Parking will be prohibited on Pennsylvania Avenue from 22nd Street to 23rd Street (south side) as well as Park Towne Place from 22nd Street to 24th Street (north side) starting at 7am. These restrictions will continue through 11:59pm on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Wednesday, Aug. 31: The inner lanes of Benjamin Franklin Parkway between 20th Street and Eakins Oval will be closed starting at 10am. Cross traffic on numbered streets will be permitted. This closure will continue through 5am on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Thursday, Sept. 1: 22nd Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Benjamin Franklin Parkway will be reduced to one running lane starting at 7pm. This closure will continue through 5am on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Friday, Sept. 2: These streets will be closed starting at 10am:
- Outer lanes of Benjamin Franklin Parkway between 20th Street and Eakins Oval
- 23rd Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Benjamin Franklin Parkway
- 22nd Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Park Towne Place
- 21st Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Winter Street
- Kelly Drive outbound from Benjamin Franklin Parkway to Fairmount Avenue
Also starting 10am Friday, due to the closure of the outer lanes on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, traffic headed inbound (to Center City) from Spring Garden Street Bridge or Martin Luther King Drive must exit Eakins Oval on the 24th Street ramp. Traffic headed inbound on Kelly Drive must exit Kelly Drive at Fairmount Avenue.

Saturday, Sept. 3: The full extent of road closures around the festival site will begin at 10am and remain through the duration of the event.

This is the complete list of road closures, followed by no parking restrictions:
Road Closures
- The entire width of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, beginning at 20th Street extending through Eakins Oval (25th Street) and behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art
- 21st Street between Winter & Spring Garden Streets
- 22nd Street between Race Street & Fairmount Avenue
- 23rd Street between the Benjamin Franklin Parkway & Fairmount Avenue
- 24th Street between Fairmount & Pennsylvania Avenues
- Spring Garden Street, between 20th Street & Benjamin Franklin Parkway, including the Spring Garden Street Tunnel.
- Kelly Drive between 23rd Street & Fairmount Avenue
- Martin Luther King Drive between the Falls Bridge & Benjamin Franklin Parkway
- Pennsylvania Avenue between Hamilton & Fairmount Avenues
- 2000 block of Pennsylvania Avenue between the Whole Foods store & 21st Street (the eastern half of the block, from the Whole Foods Market to 20th Street, will remain open to allow access to the store)
- Park Towne Place between 22nd & 24th Streets
- I-676 westbound off-ramp at 22nd Street (I-676 eastbound off-ramp at 23rd Street will be open)
No Parking
- Pennsylvania Avenue between 22nd Street & Fairmount Avenue (south side of street)
- Winter Street between 20th & 22nd Streets (both sides of street)
- 20th Street between Vine & Callowhill Streets (east side of street)
- 21st Street between Benjamin Franklin Parkway & Race Street (both sides of street)
- 22nd Street between Winter & Spring Garden Streets (both sides of street)
- Park Towne Place between 22nd & 24th Streets (both sides of street)

The city says to expect delays and suggests drivers avoid the area. All roadways will be open before the morning rush hour on Tuesday, Sept. 6. However, some low-impact parking and travel lane restrictions will remain in place until 11:59pm Tuesday. SEPTA says due to planned street closures around the Parkway before, during, and after the festival, bus routes 7, 32, 33, 38, 43, and 38 will operate on a temporary detour. That starts at 10am Friday, Sept. 2 and continues through 5am, Monday Sept. 5.
Additional trains will operate before and during the festival on the Broad Street and Market-Frankford Lines.

A heartbroken community gathered to remember young Gabby Carter and now, the reward for her killerâ€™s capture has more than doubled to $50,000 thanks to a private donation. Eight year old Gabby died Friday, two days after she was caught in gang-related crossfire. Gabby was shot in the head while riding her bike, across the street from her Camden home. They're asking anyone who can help find Gabby's killer to come forward.

With the long-awaited $5.4 billion Panama Canal expansion completed, allowing bigger ships to carry more cargo through the waterway, some of those larger vessels are now coming to the Port of Philadelphia. Mediterranean Shipping Co. began a new freight route Aug. 3, hauling fruit and "dry" cargoes such as tires, wood products, wine, sugar, and cocoa beans from Chile and Peru through the canal's new traffic lane, with a stop in Freeport, Bahamas, and then in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Regional Port Authority, which owns 15 piers and terminals on the Delaware River, puts the economic impact of MSC's new route at $21.8 million in annual personal income and $5.7 million in state, local, and federal taxes.
