PA Narcotics Database, Symfony Eye Lens, Emerald Ash Borer in Delaware

Too many patients are getting multiple prescriptions for narcotics by visiting doctor after doctor. Beginning Thursday, doctors in Pennsylvania have a new tool to battle opioid drug addiction. Physicians enter a name into a statewide data base to find out if that patient has recently been prescribed a narcotic elsewhere in the Commonwealth. Dr. Jack Kelly, Chairman of Emergency Medicine for the Einstein Healthcare Network, says it should help doctors spot people trying to get prescriptions from many providers and he says this should help curb abuse. Currently the data base only shows prescriptions written in Pennsylvania. Missouri is now the only state without a drug monitoring program in place.

There is now an exciting new option for the millions of Americans who have cataracts. The FDA has approved a new lens for people with cataracts. Doctors say it is giving patients back their natural vision and reducing the need for glasses. The Symfony, unlike previous options, is a lens that can improve vision from near, intermediate and far distances and points in between. The new lens will now be available at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Cataracts are very common and most often related to aging. Itâ€™s estimated that nearly 4 million cataract surgeries are performed every year.

A destructive, invasive beetle, that kills ash trees, has been detected in the state of Delaware. Officials say an Emerald Ash Borer was recently caught in a trap in New Castle County. The state is responding, now banning untreated wood from coming into the state. The move is an effort to help prevent the spread of the beetle. Many lawns in Delaware are dotted with ash trees. Infected trees die and must be removed â€” a cost that falls on home owners.
