Deliman 27th Auxiliary Bishop, DA Williams Gift Controversy, City Hall Beer Garden

A mass of consecration for Philadelphia's newest auxiliary bishop was held in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on the Parkway Thursday afternoon. Retired Cardinal Justin Rigali joined his successor, Archbishop Charles Chaput, along with bishops from Harrisburg and New York, to ordain Bishop Edward Deliman as the 27th auxiliary in the history of the archdiocese. Deliman, who has been working in ministry to the growing Latino community in the archdiocese, is expected to continue and expand that role. The 69-year-old Deliman, who has been serving as priest for 43 years, addressed the packed cathedral in Spanish. Then, he thanked his family and many supporters for their confidence in his ministry:
"I pray for the grace that for you I can be a bishop and a good bishop and with you a Christian and a priest."

A staggering gift-giving controversy is now hanging over Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams. There were personal and professional “tokens of appreciation,” from 2010 to 2015, that Williams admittedly failed to disclose. The documents filed this week with the ethics board tell the story. The most expensive gift, the new $45,000 roof on Williams’ Overbrook home, paid for by a New Jersey contractor who is said to be a friend. The documents show vacations, including one to Punta Cana and airfare paid for by friends. A Philadelphia judge gifted Williams tickets to the Phillies and a trip to Atlantic City.

Philadelphia City Hall’s courtyard underwent a transformation on Thursday. It became a festive beer garden. The event was free to the public, and in addition to beverages, it featured live musical performances by Philadelphia artists. Visitors enjoyed food and drink from a mobile craft beer truck. It was equipped with local crafts. If you missed it, City Hall will transform one last time on September 20.
