Kathleen Kane Impeachment, National Honeybee Awareness Day, Jewelers' Row Death

Kathleen Kane resigned as Pennsylvania's attorney general on Wednesday. But despite her conviction on perjury and other charges Monday night, impeachment proceedings against her may continue. Montgomery County Republican Todd Stephens is chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts. He says no decision has been made about the House impeachment investigation of Kathleen Kane which has been underway for several months. He says one reason the proceedings may continue is to bar Kane from holding office in the future.

The hard-working honeybee was honored with a day celebrating its many contributions. National Honeybee Awareness Day is August 20, but on Wednesday evening members of the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild held a gala at the Sofitel Hotel in Center City. Don Shump, the president of the Guild, explained the importance of honeybees and the steep decline in their colonies over the last decade. Kathy May, a beekeeper in Philadelphia, says pesticides and lack of forage are just a few of the reasons why bee numbers are shrinking.

Business owners along Jewelers’ Row heard about Toll Brothers’ interest in building a 16-story luxury apartment building in the area. The city recently approved a zoning permit for Toll Brothers to do just that along a five-parcel stretch of Jewelers’ Row. Though officials have yet to approve actual demolition. The change would uproot several small business owners, who spent decades working on Jewelers’ Row. In an effort to stop the project, the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia launched a petition that has gathered thousands of signatures in just a few days. Other business owners fear a luxury apartment building would draw in more commercial properties.
