At least three people, including a 6 year old boy Mahaj Brown (pictured), were wounded in a shooting last night in East Germantown. A gun battle apparently broke out and some people, including the child who was in a car, were caught in the cross fire. The child is the second 6-year-old wounded by gunfire in Philadelphia this week. On Tuesday night, a 6-year-old girl was critically wounded when gunfire erupted while she was sitting in front of her home in East Germantown. She remains at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.
The National Weather Service has extended the Excessive Heat Warning until Sunday night as the combination of high temperatures and humidity will make it feel like more than 100 degrees at times during the weekend. Heat indexes for Friday and Sunday could hit 105 degrees, while it could feel more like 110 degrees on Saturday. The overnight low did not get below 81 Friday morning, setting a new record. Over the next several days it will be hotter in Philadelphia than it is in Florida.
Congratulations are in order for several Philadelphia area high schools for making Newsweek’s list of the Top 500 public high schools in the nation. Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Haverford High School in Havertown, Radnor, Great Valley, and all three Central Bucks High Schools were among 30 Pennsylvania schools making the list. Newsweek looked at six measurements and weighted them to come up with a “college readiness index.†Here's a look at all of the Pennsylvania high schools that made Newsweek's list and their ranking:
(36) Conestoga High School, Berwyn
(49) Unionville High School, Kennett Square
(58) Downingtown STEM Academy, Downingtown
(106) Radnor High School, Radnor
(113) Upper St. Clair High School, Pittsburgh

The school rankings are borne of research. Newsweek, along with the analytics firm Westat, uses legitimate and objective measurements to put together its annual ranking of the country’s best high schools.
Newsweek looked at six measurements and weighted them to come up with a “college readiness index.†The rankings are meant to show how well high schools do at preparing students for college.
Those measurements and their weight are:
Holding power: 10 percent
Ratio of counselor/full-time equivalent to student enrollment: 10 percent
Weighted SAT/ACT: 17.5 percent
Weighted AP/IB/dual enrollment composite: 17.5 percent
Graduation rate: 20 percent
College enrollment rate: 25 percent
In all, 6,477 of the nation’s 15,819 public high schools met the criteria to be considered in Newsweek’s rankings. Newsweek used school performance data from the National Center for Education Statistics to narrow down the list of schools.
