NJ Woman Killed in Hit and Run; PA Child Seat Law Change; Msgr. William Lynn Seeking Bail

Police are looking for the driver of a sport utility vehicle who they say struck and killed a 27 year old woman, and drove away from the scene in Atlantic County. Galloway Township police say Aubrey Servis was walking in a crosswalk on White Horse Pike at 6th Avenue at about 10pm Monday when she was hit by the SUV. The Little Egg Harbor woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pennsylvania's child safety seat laws are changing. Starting next Friday, Aug. 12, a child under 2 years old must be securely fastened in a rear-facing child passenger restraint system. Then, that child passenger restraint system must be used until the child outgrows the maximum weight and limits designated by the manufacturer. The current law does not require small children to be rear-facing in the passenger restraint system.

A former Philadelphia church official imprisoned over his handling of abuse complaints will be asking for bail after Pennsylvania's highest court granted him a new trial. Monsignor William Lynn's hearing is scheduled for 10am Tuesday. Lynn is the first person ever charged and convicted of helping the Roman Catholic Church shield child molesters within its ranks. Ever since, appeals courts have wrestled with the legality of his conviction. Lynn has been in and out of prison as the courts have twice thrown out his conviction. He has served nearly three years of a three- to six-year sentence, and is due to be paroled in October. Defense lawyer Thomas Bergstrom plans to ask a judge to release the 65-year-old Lynn. Prosecutors have not said whether they will retry the longtime secretary for clergy.

UPDATE: Lynn was granted bail and was released from a state prison in northeastern Pennsylvania. He'll be staying with relatives in Reading. Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said he plans to retry Lynn.
