A South Jersey mas was almost killed by state police in what some are calling a big misunderstanding. Around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, troopers from the Bridgeton Barracks were doing a wellness check in Upper Deerfield after someone called 9-1-1 and hung up. When the two troopers knocked on the door, no one answered. As they shone their flashlights in the rear sliding glass door, gunfire broke out between one of the troopers and the homeowner, who had a shotgun. One officer was grazed by broken glass, or shotgun spray. The homeowner, 76-year-old Gerald Sykes, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was flown to Cooper Hospital in critical condition. Sykes' family, who were advised by their attorney not to give any interviews, said that the elderly man did not hear the officers identify themselves. Investigators say the troopers did try to communicate who they were and why they were there. Sykes' family added that he suffered multiple deep chest wounds, but that he is doing better and is alert.
During the Democratic National Convention, the Philadelphia Parking Authority prohibited drivers from parking in the median on South Broad Street. That's a Philly thing, but now that the convention is over, some residents are pushing for the restriction to become a permanent law. If you've driven down Broad Street, you've seen it... car after car in the road along the median. However, these cars are not waiting to turn. They're parked, spanning about 16 blocks of Broad Street and it's technically illegal. But, despite about 1,000 signatures on that petition, Mayor Jim Kenney says that he won't be jumping to action.
The newest addition to Philadelphia's skyline is the world's 152nd Mormon Temple. Standing 19 stories high, and topped with a golden Angel, the Philadelphia temple is the first in Pennsylvania. The temple will serve more than 40,000 Mormons in the region, provide a place of peace, prayer, and a sacred place to perform the LDS Church's most important sacraments. Church leaders say the temple is built to last and was made with the best materials. The church commissioned oil paintings, colonial style chandeliers, and used 18th century architecture throughout. The details are astounding, with elements of Philadelphia and American history on every floor. The Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple will be open to the public from August 10th to September 9th. So far, 150,000 are expected to take the tour, but church leaders say they can accommodate more. Once the temple is dedicated in September, only members of the church will be allowed inside. To find out more about the LDS church or to register for a tour, go to philadelphiamormontemple.org, or call 1-855-537-2000.
