Madison Holleran Suicide Prevention Act Signed; Ambler Shooting Victims ID; MLK Camden House

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed a bill into law today inspired by a New Jersey high school track star and Penn student who took her own life two years ago. The Madison Holleran Suicide Prevention Act requires that NJ colleges offer students 24/7 access to mental health professionals. The schools must also notify students of their resources at least 15 days before each new semester. Madison was the NJ state 800m champion at Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale. She went on to the University of Pennsylvania where she also was on the track team. Madison was 19-years-old and a freshman when she took her own life near Penn's campus in University City in January 2014. Jim and Stacy Holleran, her parents, started the Madison Holleran Foundation to help student's in crisis. This legislation only applies to New Jersey, however, Penn has increased it's mental health task force and added a 24 hour hotline for students.

Montgomery County officials have identified the two people shot dead last night at the Forest Garden Apartments in Ambler. It happened around 11:15 p.m. Sunday on the 100 block of Forest Avenue. Police were called to the scene after neighbors heard gunshots. The first victim, 54-year-old Janice Trunk, lived at the apartment for almost 10 years with her 19-year-old son. The second victim is 44-year-old Kevin Milton Smith. The son was at a friend's house for the night. Police do not yet know how or why they were killed, if it was a break in gone bad or if they were targeted. They did say that it was not a murder-suicide.

In 1950, Martin Luther King Jr. was a student and seminarian at the now closed Crozer Theological Seminary in Upland, New Jersey. During that time he lived in the house at 753 Walnut St. in Camden. (see below). The house has seen better days and on July 8th the owner, Jennette Lily Hunt, found a demolition notice on the property. Hunt has been trying to get the home recognized and applied for a historic designation but hasn't made any progress on that since January 2015. With the designation comes the possibility of historical preservation grants. Camden Urban Enterprise Zone program coordinator Vincent Basara says the city doesn't plan to raze the property. The notice is just part of a routine maintenance effort. They want to see it in compliance with codes intended to minimize urban blight.
