Philadelphia Protesters Day 6, Threats To Police, Red Light Camera Program

Protesters marched the streets of Philadelphia Monday evening for the sixth straight day taking a stand against police brutality. Starting at Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue in North Philadelphia, about three-dozen protesters, many of whom are still in high school, held signs, chanted, and voiced their frustration about the relationship between police and many black people around America. The march ended at 33rd Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue where protesters gathered to pray.

Philadelphia Police are aware of threats that were made against Philadelphia officers. After a man in Dallas claimed the lives of five police officers, during protests of the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, officers across the country have been on high alert. Officials with the Philadelphia Police Department said they have been alerted to several threats made involving a number of their districts.

A spokesman says Governor Wolf is expected to sign a bill on the way to his desk that would extend Philadelphiaâ€™s red light camera program through 2027. Under current law, the red light camera program covering Philadelphia and other eligible municipalities is set to expire next summer. The bill sent to Governor Wolf by the House would extend the red light program ten years beyond that. Delaware County House Democrat Greg Vitali is not a fan of red light cameras, which he believes are more about making money than promoting safety. The legislation also directs PennDOT to study the effectiveness of the red light camera program and report to the transportation committees of the legislature next summer.
