Christie Orders Roadwork Shutdown; Special Election Date Set; Rush Hour Protest Ban Lifted

Late on Thursday night New Jersey Governor Chris Christie ordered the shutdown of all projects funded by the state's transportation trust fund. The executive order comes after the Democratic-led Senate declined to vote on a bill that would replenish the fund. A bill that passed Assembly and was supported by Christie was on the table, but Senate leaders, who support a different plan, decided to let the deadline pass without even a vote. All road, bridge, and transit work in the state paid for by the TTF will stop at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday. Projects paid for with federal funds or those deemed "absolutely essential" will continue.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has set the date for the special election to fill the U.S. House seat left vacant by Chaka Fattah. The election will be held on November 8th, 2016. That is the same date as the general election and was chosen to save the taxpayers money. Fattah was an 11-term Congressman from the 2nd District, holding his office since 1995. Fattah lost his bid for reelection in the May primaries. He resigned from office on June 23rd following his conviction on 22 counts related to federal racketeering, bribery, and fraud charges. The winner of the special election will serve around 8 weeks until the general election winner is sworn in.

The City of Philadelphia has reversed course on its ban of rush hour protests during the Democratic National Convention later this month. The Poor Peopleâ€™s Economic Human Rights Campaign along with the ACLU had sued the city after they were denied a permit to march from City Hall to South Philly along Broad Street on July 25th, the first day of the convention. It would have started at 3 p.m. and continued through the evening rush. That suit has now been settled and they will be allowed to march. Officials don't want to close off major arteries in the city, but rolling closures can be expected. Permits will not be denied just because of the time of day. They encourage everyone planning to protest to file for a permit.

Sports
The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a deal with unrestricted free agent G Jerryd Bayless for three-years, $27 million. An 8-year-veteran, Bayless played last season with the Milwaukee Bucks. The deal came a few hours after Sixers G Ish Smith agreed to a three-year, $18 deal with the Detroit Pistons. Bayless can't officially sign until July 7th.
