No Gas Tax Vote by NJ Senate; Teen Surrenders in Germantown Shooting; Kidnapper Sentenced 35 Years

The NJ Senate will not vote on a bill approved by the Assembly and supported by Gov. Chris Christie that would raise the gas tax and lower the sales tax. The bill would have raised the gas tax to 37.5 cents a gallon from 14.5 cents and lowered the sales tax from 7 percent to 6. The measure would help pay for road and bridge work and extend the state's transportation trust fund's borrowing authority. Sen. Paul Sarlo, the budget committee chairman, and Senate President Steve Sweeney support a competing plan that also raises gas taxes but includes more tax cuts.

A 15-year-old boy turned himself in to Philadelphia police on Wednesday night in connection with the accidental shooting of a 13-year-old boy in Germantown. The 15-year-old has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. It happened late Wednesday afternoon on the unit block of East Walnut Lane. A group of around 6 boys were playing basketball at one of their homes and then entered an abandoned house on the block around 5:20 p.m. They discovered a gun and began passing it around. The 15-year-old pointed it, fired it, and accidentally shot his friend in the face. 13-year-old Chris Mackey was rushed to Einstein Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police are trying to determine who owns the gun and how it ended up in the abandoned house.

The man who kidnapped a woman off the streets in Germantown in 2014 and led authorities on a three-day manhunt across state lines has been sentenced today in Philadelphia court. Delvin Barnes has been sentenced to 35 years in prison in accordance to a plea deal. In November 2014, he was caught on surveillance camera grabbing 22-year-old Carlesha Freeland-Gaither and pushing her into his car. Police used ATM images from a mini-mart in Maryland and a GPS device left in the car by the used car dealership to track them to Jessup, MD. Freeland-Gaither was found bound in the car's trunk. Barnes is also accused of attacking a teen girl in Maryland in October 2014 and spent 8 years in prison previously for assaulting his ex-wife.

Phillies pitching prospect Matt Imhof had his right eye removed on Tuesday after a freak accident last week following a game in Florida. The 22-year-old was taking part in a routine stretching exercise when a piece of equipment malfunctioned and a large piece of metal hit him in the face. He suffered a fractured his nose, two orbital bones and lost vision in his right eye. Doctors recommended that because the damage to his eye was extreme and that he have it removed. He will have a prosthetic eye placed in his right socket. Imhof was the Phillies' 47th overall pick in 2014.

As many of you know on Friday June 25th I had an accident. A large price of metal hit me in the head/eye resulting in a fractured nose, 2 fractured orbital bones, and most significantly, the loss of vision in my right eye. I was immediately taken to the ER and then transferred to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the #1 eye hospital in the world. That night, the doctors informed me that the damage to my eye was extreme and essentially that my eye had been crushed like a grape. The doctors told me they were going to do everything possible to reconstruct it but in all likelihood I would never regain sight in my right eye. The first surgery was somewhat a success but overall nothing had changed, so after discussions with my family and my doctors, it was decided that the best chance I had to live a normal life was to have my right eye removed and have a prosthetic one put in. This decision was not an easy one to make but to me it seemed like the right one so on Tuesday afternoon I went forward with the surgery. I'm currently still in Miami recovering from surgery but I'm doing well. This has been the hardest week of my life but I've had amazing support from my family and friends to help me get through it. For those who have been wishing me well, your support has not gone unnoticed and I appreciate everyone who has kept me in their thoughts and prayers. I had the best doctors in the world doing their best work on me and for that I am grateful as well. Although this injury has been tough it could have been much worse...I'm lucky to still have vision in my left eye...I'm lucky that i didn't have brain damage...and I'm lucky to be surrounded my the most loving and understanding people in the world. I just wanted to write this message to let everyone know that even though I suffered some bad luck, I'm not dead. I'm gonna be alright, I'm gonna persevere, and I'm gonna succeed. It takes more than this to bring me down. Again thanks to everyone for the support .
