Folcroft Officer Dorman Leaves Hospital; Northeast Philly Car Wash Death; Supreme Court Rules 5-3

Folcroft Officer Christopher Dorman was released this afternoon from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in West Philadelphia just three days after being shot seven times. Dorman was greeted by a line of officers and a cheering crowd as he was wheeled to an awaiting SUV and a motorcade back to the Folcroft Fire Co. The 25-year-old was wounded while responding to a call about possible drug activity on Friday. The suspect opened fire on him, hitting him in the legs, torso, and face. After several surgeries over the weekend he is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect, Donte Brooks Island, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault and related offenses. He is being held on $1 million bail.

An employee of a Northeast Philadelphia car wash died Monday morning after being struck by two cars while working. It happened just before noon at the Krewsin Klean Car Wash in the 9200 block of Krewstown Road in Bustleton. A 22-year-old worker was drying the rear windows of a grey Dodge Durango when the SUV struck him. He was struck again when a red 2004 Honda Accord exited the car wash. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still investigating the incident. No charges have been filed.

The Supreme Court ruled 5-3 today against tough restrictions placed on abortion providers in the state of Texas. The Texas law required abortion centers to meet the same guidelines as walk-in surgical centers and that abortion doctors have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. The number of clinics statewide has dropped from 42 to 19 and falling. Many closed rather than retrofit their operations. Opponents said this was just a ploy by a pro-life legislature to limit access to abortion services. Proponents say that the rules would provide safe environments for the procedures and prevent another Kermit Gosnell situation. Justice Stephen Breyer wrote in the majority opinion that "the surgical-center requirement, like the admitting privileges requirement, provides few, if any, health benefits for women, poses a substantial obstacle to women seeking abortions and constitutes an 'undue burden' on their constitutional right to do so."
