DNCC Moves into Wells Fargo Center; NWS Says Microburst in Cape May; North Penn Firestarter Sentence

The Democratic National Convention Committee moved all of its operations into the Wells Fargo Center today ahead of next month's convention. At this point in the preparations they are in the process of converting the Center into a state of the art political convention arena. Seats have been removed to make room for the podium and staging, luxury boxes have been stripped so the TV networks can build mini studios, all the sports memorabilia has been put in storage, and 40 miles of wires will be laid to keep everyone connected as the eyes of the world is on Philadelphia. 33 days and counting.

The National Weather Service has determined that the severe damage in Cape May County on Tuesday was caused by a microburst and not a tornado. The NWS dispatched a team to the affected areas on Wednesday to survey the damage. A microburst is described as â€œa localized column of sinking air (downdraft) within a thunderstorm.â€ Wind speeds in yesterday's storm reached 80 mph in addition to the heavy rains and hail. Trees were knocked over, the roof of the Wildwood Public Works was ripped off, and even a small plane was flipped over at Cape May County Airport. Atlantic City Electric says approximately 39,000 lost power though most have been restored.

A 17-year-old North Penn High School student who admitted to setting a fire last month that caused hundreds of thousands in damage was sentenced today in juvenile court. The teen confessed to lighting a stack of napkins on fire in the band storage room. The flames quickly spread, destroying the band practice area as well as instruments, sheet music, and equipment. The total damage is around $800,000. The teen was ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution (the school's insurance deductible). He also admitted that he was having a lot of personal issues and lighting fires was emotionally gratifying. The judge acknowledged that, but told him, "You donâ€™t have a monopoly on trauma." He will be placed in a residential facility that specializes in fire-setters. North Penn officials are confident the band will be ready for football season, but the building itself may not.

Sports

Villanova Men's Basketball team was honored this afternoon with this year's John Wanamaker Athletic Award which is "presented each year to the athlete, team or organization which has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia." It was first presented in 1961. Villanova also won the award in 1985 after winning it's first NCAA Men's Basketball Championship, in 2010 for it's 2009 NCAA Football FCS National Championship, in 2003 for the Women's Basketball Team, 1969 for Jumbo Elliot Head Track Coach, and in 1962 Frank Budd track athlete.
