PA Elective Abortions Ban, ACLU DNC Protest Questions, Philadelphia Sept 11 Memorial

The state House has sent the Senate a bill that would ban elective abortions after 20 weeks. The bill passed with bi-partisan support, but Governor Wolf opposes it. In addition to a ban on elective abortion after 20 weeks, instead of the current 24, also banned would be what the language of the bill calls "dismemberment" abortion. The sponsor of the bill is Warren County Republican Kathy Rapp.

The American Civil Liberties Union has some questions for the city of Philadelphia about protests during the upcoming Democratic National Convention. The first question is, will the city issue any permits for marches and demonstrations on Broad Street? The city says no, there will be no blanket ban on demonstrations on Broad Street. Another question is, will groups be arrested simply because they do not have a permit? The city answers in part, ‘we haven’t arrested individuals or groups that are peacefully demonstrating just because they don’t have a permit. Note that demonstrating without a permit is illegal and we’re strongly encouraging all protesters to apply for a permit.’

The Delaware River Port Authority board on Wednesday decides whether to approve a September 11 memorial. The memorial would be built on the Philadelphia side of the Ben Franklin Bridge, on a triangular DRPA-owned parcel at Sixth and Race, just north of the Constitution Center. Proposed renderings show two symbolic towers – each 9 feet eleven inches tall – with a replica of the Liberty Bell hanging between them. DRPA CEO John Hanson says the memorial will contain authentic artifacts. The memorial would come at no cost to the DRPA. Labor is to be donated by volunteers and the EP Henry Corporation, which is also donating materials. The DRPA plans to build the memorial in time to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
