The School Reform Commission of the School District of Philadelphia announced Thursday they have approved a policy detailing the rights of transgender and gender non-conforming students. Superintendent, Dr. William R. Hite says "Every student deserves to know their rights will be recognized and upheld at school. Students may be addressed by names and pronouns corresponding to their gender identity in interactions with other students and staff, and written records, including class rosters, report cards, letters from the school or District, and photo ID. Transgender identity, legal name and sex assigned at birth is considered to be confidential information. Students may participate in gender-segregated groups that correspond to their gender identity. Schools should use gender-neutral language in communication with all students and families, regardless of a student's gender-identity. Students may access locker rooms and restrooms that correspond to their gender identity. Students who desire more privacy may be provided with access to a single-stall restroom or alternative changing area. No student will be required to use a single-stall restroom. Students may also dress in accordance with their gender identity. Schools may not adopt dress codes that restrict clothing or appearance on the basis of gender. The policy also addresses participation in physical education classes, intramural sports, interscholastic competitive sports teams, training and curriculum.

Two South Philly restaurants got shut down after health department inspections. Caffe Valentino, the BYOB in Pennsport, was shut down twice this week after failing inspections that turned up numerous insects. At Monsu, the Sicilian bistro at the Italian Market, an inspector noted mouse droppings in the kitchen on plates, bowls, cooking utensils. The observation cost the restaurant two days of business.

Some SEPTA riders will have to adjust as new schedules go into effect this weekend. The transit agency says its summer schedules start Sunday or Monday, depending on the route. The schedule shift is due to seasonal ridership changes. Complete lists of summer schedule changes for Regional Rail lines and trolley and bus routes can be found on SEPTA's website.
