Thursday, NJ Governor Chris Christie unveiled a series of changes aimed at making things easier for charter schools to flourish in the Garden State. Addressing the New Jersey Charter School Association meeting in Atlantic City, Christie announced his plan to respond to the needs of teachers, administrators and parents alike. That’s been labeled a "double down" on a failed policy in the view of the New Jersey Education Association. They issued a statement insisting Christie’s support of charters "has further drained funds from the very schools he loves to criticize."

A Philadelphia woman was the only person on public assistance to speak at House Budget Committee hearings on Poverty. Now, her experience is the focus of a new documentary.
Titled A Hug from Paul Ryan, the six minute film tells the story of Tianna Gaines-Turner, a married mother of three who is a recipient of food stamps. She spoke at 2014 War on Poverty hearings in Washington as federal lawmakers made decisions on whether to cut benefits, and at the end, instead of a handshake, she gave House leader Paul Ryan a hug. A Hug from Paul Ryan is part of Take 5: Justice in America — a series produced by the AMC Network.

Lawmakers in New Jersey have sent a measure to Gov. Chris Christie’s desk to ban smoking at public beaches and parks. The state Assembly and Senate approved the measure on Thursday. Christie vetoed an attempt to ban smoking at beaches and parks in September 2014. He said on his regular call-in radio show on 101.5 FM Wednesday night that he doesn’t see why the decision to ban smoking shouldn’t be left to towns across the state.
