9-1-1 Caller Privacy Bill, DHS Cert Revoked, Breast Cancer Detection Bra

A spokesman says Governor Wolf will sign a bill headed to his desk that is intended to protect the privacy of 9-1-1- callers. The bill sent to the governor Tuesday provides that in response to a Right-To-Know request, release of the name, telephone number and home address of people who call 911 would be prohibited in most circumstances. The exception would be in cases where the 911 call center or a court determines that release of the information is in the public interest. The location of the incident would be public information if it does not compromise the identity of a caller, victim or witness. The public would still be able to find out the street block identifier, cross street or mile marker nearest the incident. Saying the bill mostly codifies in statute existing law set forth by courts, the governor’s spokesman says he will sign it.

State welfare officials has revoked the Philadelphia Department of Human Services' certificate of compliance and, instead, issued a provisional license to provide services to children. Pennsylvania Human Services Secretary Ted Dallas says the state's annual licensing inspection in January found numerous violations from missing paperwork to inadequate placements, including in DHS’s own offices. In all the city received 70 citations. It returned a plan of correction, which the state rejected as inadequate.

Researchers are very excited about wearable technology that they say can catch breast cancer in its earliest stages. This smart bra looks a lot like a sports bra. Inside are heat seeking sensors that could save a life. The maker wants women to imagine having a breast cancer exam in your own home, or as you go about your day. It’s called the iTBra and it could be become the latest weapon in detecting early signs of breast cancer. Connected patches are worn inside the actual bra. The patches have metal sensors that detect a rise in temperature. The theory is that when cancer forms in the breast, and the tumor builds its own blood supply, it increases heat. The bra picks up on that heat and sends an alert to a woman’s smart phone, or computer. It’s important to note that this does not take the place of a mammogram. The company that developed the bra is planning more clinical trials and hopes to get FDA approval in the fall. Researchers say that someday, women might be able to buy this bra at a drugstore and get results similar to how they do with a pregnancy test. Of course, they need to follow up with a doctor.
