Teens Charge in School Death; Counterfeit SEPTA Passes; US Sues North Carolina Over Trans-Gender Law

Three teenage girls have been charged in connection with the death of Amy Joyner-Francis, who died after an assault in a school bathroom. The assault, captured on video, shows one of the girls repeatedly striking Joyner-Francis in the head and torso with what appears to be a closed fist. The medical examiner determined that Joyner-Francis died from a pre-existing heart condition but the cardiac incident would not have occurred if she had not been assaulted.

A former city of Philadelphia employee faces 20 years in federal prison. Mark Cooper and Kimberly Adams created and sold more than 2,000 counterfeit monthly SEPTA TransPasses that let passengers onto SEPTA buses, trolleys and subways. Cooper created the counterfeit passes and gave them to Adams, who sold most of them to City of Philadelphia employees inside and outside of City Hall. They sold the fake TransPasses for which SEPTA charges $91, for $50 each."

A potentially epic clash over transgender rights is taking shape in North Carolina. The U.S. Justice Department has sued the state over its bathroom law requiring transgender people to use public restrooms and showers corresponding to the gender on their birth certificate. U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said North Carolina's law amounts to "state-sponsored discrimination." Billions of dollars in federal aid for North Carolina - and a potentially landmark decision regarding the reach of the nation's civil-rights laws - are at stake in the dispute.
