About 39,000 Verizon workers are on strike after last-ditch talks between the company and unions failed Tuesday night. The employees from Verizon Communication Inc.'s landline division walked off the job at 6 a.m. Wednesday. Workers and union officials set up pickets at Verizon's building at Ninth and Race streets in Chinatown ahead of an 8 a.m. rally. The strike involves Communications Workers of America and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers members from New England to West Virginia, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The striking union members, who have been working without a contract since August, also handle fiber-optic cable installation, sales and service. Verizon said it has trained thousands of non-union employees and "business partners" to fill in for some of the striking workers.

SWAT teams were called out to a situation in West Philadelphia early Wednesday morning that left one man dead. Officers responded to the 6000 block of Vine Street around 4:00 a.m. after neighbors called police to report gunshots. Police discovered a 25-year-old male with gunshot wounds. The victim was and taken to the hospital where he later died. Police arrested a 23-year-old man hiding on the second floor.

For the second time in less than a year, the Pennsylvania Senate passed medical marijuana legislation Tuesday, and backers hope the House will accept the changes and send it to Gov. Tom Wolf's desk later this week. The issue has won overwhelming, bipartisan support in both chambers. It's being driven by the parents of children who suffer daily seizures and have lost their ability to function intellectually at their age level.
