Penn Student Killed By Train; Cabrini Student Dies in West Conshohocken; Verizon Workers to Strike

University of Pennsylvania officials have identified the student who was struck and killed by a SEPTA Market-Frankford train on Monday morning. 21-year-old Ao "Olivia" Kong was a junior finance major at Wharton School of Business. She is from Philadelphia and attended Central High School. It happened around 7 a.m. near the 40th Street Station. Police say that she jumped in front of the train and was pronounced dead at the scene. Kong was a member of both a business and a service fraternity as well as a Mayor's Scholar. A statement released by Penn read in part, "She was a bright, well-liked and successful member of our junior class. We have been in contact with her family and have conveyed our deepest sympathies to them at this very sad and tragic time." Students gathered for a vigil on Monday night. Penn has seen 10 suicides in the last three years. Penn's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) are available to all students, however, some say there is a cultural stigma on campus against those seeking help or admitting a problem.

A 22-year-old Cabrini College lacrosse player was found dead Sunday afternoon in a West Conshohocken home rented by college students. The man was at a party at the home on the 200 block of Morehead Avenue on Saturday night. When the students awoke on Sunday they found their friend unresponsive. Police performed CPR and administered the opiate overdose reversal drug Naloxone to no avail. Police say there will be no criminal investigation and that there is no evidence of foul play, but a drug overdose is suspected. An autopsy will determine an exact cause of death.

More than 36,000 Verizon landline phone and cable workers are threatening to strike starting Wednesday morning if they do not get a new contract. The workers are represented by the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers unions. They say that Verizon wants to freeze penions, make layoffs easier, and to rely more on contract workers. The latest contract expired last August. Verizon says that it has trained thousand of non-union employees in case of a strike. It could affect nine Eastern states and Washington, D.C.
