Car Crash in Schuylkill, Man Dies; Suspect Shot by Off-Duty Cop; Woman Dead at Staples

The body of a dead man was recovered from a car that had crashed into the Schuylkill River early Saturday morning in Philadelphia. The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. along Kelly Drive in Fairmount Park. Police say the car exited the Roosevelt Boulevard south. It then crossed Ridge Ave and Kelly Drive before hitting the curb and going airborne. The car flipped over and landed in the river about 40 feet from shore. It took divers a few hours to pull the 26-year-old man from the wreckage. He was pronounced dead at the scene and probably died upon impact. The accident is still under investigation. Toxicology tests will determine if drugs or alcohol played a factor.

A robbery suspect was shot and killed by an off-duty Philadelphia SWAT officer on Saturday afternoon in the city's Olney neighborhood. It happened just after 2 p.m. on the 5700 block of Park Avenue. The officer intervened as he saw the suspect robbing another man. The suspect allegedly pointed a gun at the officer prompting him to open fire. The suspect ran off but collapsed at Broad and Chew streets. He was taken to Einstein Medical Center by police where he was later pronounced dead. Witnesses saw police remove a gun from the suspect before taking him to the hospital. The officer and the robbery victim were not injured.

Police are investigating after a woman was found dead inside an office supply store in Northwest Philadelphia surrounded by almost a dozen empty aerosol cans of keyboard cleaner. The 36-year-old woman was discovered in a Staples store on the 7700 block of Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill just after midnight Saturday morning. Managers used a crowbar to get into the bathroom after an employee realized she had been in there since 9:40 Friday evening. The woman was pronounced dead by emergency responders. 10 empty cans of the compressed air product were found in the trash can and two more in her pocketbook. Warning labels on the cans say "inhaling contents can be fatal." The cans were stolen off the shelf of the store, presumably for inhalant abuse aka huffing. An autopsy will be performed to determined exact cause of death.
