John Kasich Visits Villanova; Officer Shot Deliberately; Philadelphia Hiring Teachers

Presidential candidate Governor John Kasich appeared at a Town Hall Meeting at Villanova University on Wednesday. According to a spokesperson from Villanova, Kasich accepted an invitation from Villanova's Student Government Association to hold the Town Hall Meeting. The event took place at noon in the Villanova Room of the Connelly Center. Kasich won the Republican primary in the state of Ohio, of which he is the governor, on Tuesday.

It turns out the Delaware County native, Jacai Colson, who was killed Sunday afternoon in Maryland while on duty as an undercover police officer was "deliberately" shot by a fellow officer who did not recognize him. The department chief says it was a case of mistaken identity. Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said he did not believe the officer acted with "any malice" when he discharged his gun at Colson, a narcotics officer who was in plain clothes. At a news conference in Maryland, Stawinski declined to release other details, saying he had not yet taken statements from all of the officers involved.

The cash-strapped Philadelphia School District is looking to hire at least 800 teachers to make sure there's a teacher in every classroom this fall. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the district wants principals to have their teaching staffs chosen by June 30 as part of a new early-hiring strategy. District spokesman Fernando Gallard says officials want to prevent the problems that occurred last fall when nearly 200 teaching positions were left vacant in October. Many remain empty. The district says it wants to have 5,000 applications so it can choose teachers from the best candidates. Union leaders lauded the effort but cautioned that it would be difficult. The district says it has received 1,000 applications since the 2016 recruitment drive began at the beginning of the year.
