Hugg Hous Needs Saving; Demonstration at La Salle; Soda Tax for Pre-K

History lovers are fighting to save a Bellmawr landmark that endured the American Revolution. However it may not survive the reconstruction of I-295 and Route 42. The Hugg-Harrison-Glover House, built in 1764 on farmland that has long been part of St. Mary's Cemetery, could be torn down this year in the second phase of the $900 million "Direct Connection" project. The "Save the Hugg House!" group hopes to rally public support for moving the structure - now perched on a precipice above the work zone - about 100 feet to safety. Doing so would cost $275,000; it would take an additional $175,000 to preserve the structure for public use, advocates say.

Adding their voices to the "Black Lives Matter" movement, dozens of La Salle University students demonstrated for more than an hour on campus Monday, also calling on their own university to do more. Ariana Branford, a 21 year old senior from Reading and president of the African American Student League on campus organized the event. Branford, an African American student majoring in criminal justice and sociology, said few faculty and staff look like her even though 17 percent of La Salleâ€™s student body is African American.

Mayor Jim Kenney has a soda tax in the Philadelphia budget going before City Council this week. Sales on all soda in the city would carry a tax of 3 cents an ounce. The tax would raise $95 million a year in tax funds. In addition to funding the cityâ€™s debt, the soda tax would help fund a universal pre-k program.
