First Philadelphia Zika Case; Pot Brownies Sold to Middle School Kids; Christie Nominates Justice

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health announced Monday the first confirmed case of the Zika virus in a Philadelphia resident. The infection occurred in a 60-year-old woman who recently travelled the the Caribbean. She was not hospitalized and is recovering without complications. Zika is usually transmitted through mosquito bites. Not everyone gets sick, but those that do, suffer from fever, rash and joint pain and recover in about a week. The virus has been linked to a rare birth defect called microcephaly in babies after a pregnant mother gets infected. A Bensalem High School student has been arrested for selling brownies laced with marijuana that were then distributed to middle school students. 18-year-old Jacob Francisco of Penndel was arrested and charged with charged with possession with intent deliver, corruption of minors, and other related offenses. Francisco sold five pot brownies to a middle school student on February 25th. That student then distributed them to others at Shafer Middle School. Authorities have identified the students who purchased and/or injested the brownies but aren't releasing their names. Jacob Francisco is currently being held on $100,000 bail.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has nominated Superior Court Judge David Bauman to fill a long-standing vacancy on the state Supreme Court. Christie also nominated Bauman back in 2012, but he was not given a confirmation hearing. Judge Mary Catherine Cuff has been serving temporarily in the vacancy since 2012. The Democrat-controlled Senate and the governor have had an ongoing standoff when it comes to judicial nominations. If Bauman is somehow approved, the court will have four Republicans, two Democrats and one independent.
