Sonic booms heard and felt in Atlantic, Cape May, Ocean and Camden counties were caused by military fighter jets conducting tests. Military officials said an F-35C and an F-18 jet were conducting routine test flights from the Naval Air Station in Patuxent River Thursday afternoon. The booms started just before 1:30 p.m. and lasted about 90 minutes. They caused a series of 911 calls throughout Jersey shore communities. The U.S. Geological Survey centered the booms over Hammonton. Residents reported hearing loud booms and feeling the ground and buildings shake from New Jersey to Long Island and as far away as Connecticut. A geophysicist with the U.S.G.S. said there were nine total booms. The Department of Defense employs a hotline for noise disturbances for the Naval Air Station in Patuxent River. Questions can be referred to 866-819-9028.

A business that delivers bottled beer to homes and businesses just passed a big test with last weekend’s blizzard. Barely a year into his Quick Sip delivery service, Chris Fetfatzes says his crew managed to make all their six-pack dropoffs last weekend, much to the surprise and delight of many snowbound customers. The storm moved out just two days ahead of Quick Sip’s expansion to growler service out of Fetfatzes’ Hawthorne Cafe. He calls the service the "Uber of beer." Fetzfatzes says the overall average delivery time is 22 minutes. He’s also expanding his service north to Fishtown, Northern Liberties and over to West Philadelphia. Customers are charged a delivery fee of $1.95 after ordering online at www.quicksipdelivery.com.

In six months, Philadelphia takes the national stage again, just as it did with the Pope’s visit, when the Democratic National Convention comes to town. Key planners are reaching out to both engage and inform. When 50,000 people, including delegates, elected officials and the media visit July 25-28, the Convention will take place at the Wells Fargo Center, but there will also be a lot of folks hitting the town. Lead organizer Democratic National Convention Committee CEO Leah Daughtry expects the convention to generate about $350 million in direct and indirect economic impact to the region. Organizers say one way to feel a part of the convention experience is to volunteer, by checking out their website, www.phldnc.com. So far, 7,000 people are registered. They’re looking for 10,000 – roughly the same amount needed for Pope Francis’ visit.

Weather
