Chris Christie Announces Atlantic City Plan; Fattah Not Paying Bill; Man Charged in Schuylkill Canal

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie returned to Trenton on Tuesday to talk about plans for a state takeover of Atlantic City. First though, the presidential candidate apologized to Mayor Patrick Rosenello of North Wildwood, whom he called a 'crazy mayor' for comparing the recent snow storm to Sandy. Christie was joined at the podium by Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian to announce that legislation will be developed that will give the state control over the much of the struggling city. The state would gain control of most major decisions including finances and managing debt. Many of the city's woes have come from the troubled casino business which has seen profits drop drastically and several casinos close in recent years. There is no time frame on the bill but they hope to get it done quickly. Atlantic City council was to meet and consider bankruptcy today before this was announced.

Congressman Chaka Fattah is facing federal corruption and bribery charges related to campaign funds and charitable donations. At a hearing today, his defense team requested that Judge Harvey Bartle removed them from the case because they were not getting paid. They said that they could not afford to continue to loan the time. Fattah said he plans on paying the bills, but that raising funds for his reelection campaign this spring is his top priority. The 11-term Congressman faces several Democratic challengers in the April 26th primary. The judge did not rule today, but told Fattah he should think about his priorities. The trial is set to start May 2nd.

A Montgomery County man has been charged in the fatal crash in the Schuylkill Canal in Upper Providence Township last October that killed 2 people. 21-year-old Robert Hoffman of Collegeville is charged with accident involving death while not properly licensed, Homicide by Vehicle, and other related charges. It happened on October 5th, 2015 at the Lock 60 Recreation Area on the 400 block of Towpath Road in Mont Clare, PA. Hoffman was driving a VW Passat without a license while under the influence of marijuana, Clonazepam, and alcohol. He put the car in reverse and backed out of the parking space and into the canal, landing upside down. Hoffman and another passenger were able to escape. 29-year-old Clinton Berger and 25-year-old Lauren Magargal were both trapped and drowned. His bail is set at $10,000 unsecured.
