4-Alarm Apartment Fire on Locust; Funeral Director Loses License, Big Fine; Chichester Schools Evac

A 4-alarm fire ripped through a 3-story apartment building in Center City this evening. It started around 5:40 p.m. at 2122 Locust Street near Rittenhouse Square. Around 20 people were evacuated from the building. The fire quickly grew going to 3-alarms at 6:28 p.m. and 4-alarms right after at 6:35 p.m. Firefighters had to deal with the frigid temperatures in the 20's and the brisk winds gusting up to 20. At times early on, several firemen were on the roof trying to cut through and vent. Many of the surrounding streets are blocked with trucks, hoses, and equipment. The American Red Cross has responded to help out any of the residents who are now displaced on a cold January night. An evacuation center has been setup at Trinity Church. Two firefighters were reported injured with minor injuries, no other injuries were reported. The fire was brought under control around 7:45 p.m.

A funeral director in North Philadelphia who was arrested over the summer has been hit with steep fines and penalties by state officials. (pictured below) The Pennsylvania Board of Funeral Directors has revoked 72-year-old Janet Powell Dailey's funeral director and supervisor licenses as well as the business license for Powell Mortuary Service located near 27th Street near Cumberland. She must also pay a fine of $300,000, which is the maximum the board can impose. In August, authorities were called out to investigate an odor coming from a garage around the corner from the funeral home. They discovered three badly deteriorated bodies, one in a coffin and two in cardboard boxes. The deceased's families thought their loved ones had long been cremated and interred. The board ruled that that Dailey "failed to fulfill one of the most fundamental responsibilities that a licensee has, to treat the deceased with dignity and respect." Dailey remains in police custody. She faces criminal charges including abuse of a corpse.

Schools in the Chichester School District were evacuated late this morning following the receipt of a non-specific threat. A post on the district's facebook page told parents not to come to school to get their children, but that students were being evacuated. Boothwyn Elementary, Hilltop Elementary, Linwood Elementary, Marcus Hook Elementary, and the Chichester Middle School and Chichester High School are all in the district. School districts in New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland also received threats today. Upper Chichester police and along with other departments responded to each scene and cleared any threat. Children were eventually reunited with parents at various locations throughout the area. School district headquarters is in Aston, PA.
