Kathleen Kane Hearing, John Wister Elementary District Run, Fishtown Powerball Winner

A special state Senate committee is scheduled to hold a hearing today on the future of embattled Attorney General Kathleen Kane. But Kane has made a last-minute appeal to the Supreme Court aimed at making that hearing unnecessary. The hearing is intended to give Kathleen Kane an opportunity to make her case before a special Senate committee examining whether she can function with her law license under suspension. In a written response to the committee, Kane Monday reiterated her position that the Senate process that could lead to her removal is not legitimate.

Philadelphia’s schools superintendent says one of three elementary schools up for charter conversion will remain district-run. John Wister Elementary in Germantown will remain district-managed. Superintendent William Hite said Wister came off the conversion list because of strong growth last year. Twenty neighborhood schools have been converted to charters over the last five years, under the district’s Renaissance program. The School Reform Commission votes on the recommendations Jan. 21.

Even though no one hit the Powerball jackpot, someone in Philadelphia came pretty close.
Officials say a check-cashing store in the city’s Fishtown section sold a Powerball ticket worth $1 million. It matched all five white balls — 16, 19, 32, 34, 57 — in Saturday’s drawing but failed to match the Powerball of 13. Wilson’s Check Cashing store gets $5,000 for selling the winning ticket. This isn’t the first time a Philadelphia retailer has dealt a lucky ticket in the recent Powerball game. In December, another winning ticket matched all five numbers but missed the Powerball. It was sold at a Sunoco gas station on Cottman Avenue. The record-setting jackpot now stands at about $1.4 billion.
