NJ Horse Vet Fraud; Fire Deaths at All Time Low; Kenney Evaluating Mummers Parade

New Jersey state officials have found a Williamstown woman lied to South Jersey horse owners about being a licensed veterinarian and caused some horses to die horribly slow, painful deaths. Jacque Smith was treating horses until a six-count complaint was filed in Superior Court in Atlantic County to request restitution for the horse owners. Incidents date back to 2005. Investigators discovered that Smith never attended a veterinary school, despite telling people she had done so at the University of Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia tallied 12 fire deaths for all of 2015, the fewest ever recorded in the city's modern history. Acting Commissioner Derrick Sawyer made the announcement on his Twitter account. The good news may boost Sawyer as a candidate to continue as commissioner under Mayor Kenney, who is the son of a retired firefighter. Sawyer, a 30-year veteran of the department, was appointed commissioner in June 2014, under Mayor Michael Nutter.

New Philadelphia mayor, Jim Kenney, a former mummer was not happy about some of the depictions in this year’s parade on New Year’s day. Kenney responded to someone on Twitter asking for his thoughts on a Caitlyn Jenner skit. He tweeted back that it was bad and hurtful. He reiterated his feelings hours after being sworn in, and then charged the city's Human Relations Commission and his LGBT Affairs director, Nellie Fitzpatrick, to look into changes to the city-backed parade. Changes under consideration: Sanctions, prescreening of acts, and sensitivity training.
