Stand Up 2 Addiction Benefit, FDA Approved Defib Vest, Twitter Restriction Changes

A New Jersey dad who spent months and thousands of dollars to help his sons conquer their drug addiction has formed a foundation to help other families cope with the high cost of rehab for their loved one. Jimmy Graham started a non-profit organization Stand Up 2 Addiction to benefit the parents, children and siblings of people who were addicted. Jimmy is a stand-up comic and he plans to take the stage Friday night at the Broadway Theater in Pitman along with famed colleagues Artie Lange, Tim Grill and Steve Trevelise. Show starts at 8 p.m. All proceeds go to the foundation.

The FDA recently approved a wearable defibrillator to protect children at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. The vest is a good alternative to an implantable device that requires surgery or an automated external defibrillator that requires another person for use. Dr. Joel Temple, Director of Pediatric Electrophisiology at Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, says this is a good option for patients who are too sick for surgery or must wait for an implantable device to be inserted. The downside is the vest must be worn around the clock and patients donâ€™t always want to comply.

Twitter appears ready to loosen its decade-old restriction on the length of messages in a bid to make its service more appealing to a wider audience accustomed to the greater freedom offered by Facebook and other forums. CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey telegraphed Twitterâ€™s intentions in a tweet posted Tuesday after the technology news site Re/Code reported the company is exploring increasing its limits on text from 140 characters to as many as 10,000. Dorsey helped invent Twitter in 2006 and imposed a 140-character limit on messages so the service would be easy to use on cellphones that had 160-character limits on texts at that time.
