Bigot Mummer Banned From Parade; Pennsylvania Turnpike Rates; Philadelphia Christmas Tree Recycling

Following an incident during Friday's Mummer's parade where a member of the Finnegan New Year Brigade was caught on video yelling homophobic epithets while walking on Broad Street, both Mummers' officials and Mayor-Elect Kenney have condemned the act. The man was carrying a sign that pictured Bruce Jenner on the front of a box of Wheaties after the 1976 Olympics and then Caitlyn Jenner on a box of Fruit Loops in 2016. "It was bad. Hurtful to many Philadelphians. Our Trans Citizens do not deserve this type of satire/insult. #Berespectful," Kenney tweeted. The man was yelling, "F@#$ the gays!" to the spectators on the sidewalks. The presidents of each of the divisions said that they will have to have more discussion on sensitivity and diversity and demonstrate when satire goes "over the line." Finnegan NYB called the member "one bad apple" who would be dealt with in house. This year the parade featured the brand new Philadelphia Division which had two Hispanic performance groups, a black drill team, and the LGBT Miss Fancy Brigade.

Michael Inemer, captain of Finnegan New Year Brigade, released the following statement on Saturday:

The Goodtimers Comic Club and Finnegan New Year Brigade (NYB), which marches in the Goodtimers Club, condemn the hateful speech spoken by a person marching with Finnegan on New Year's Day. As a result of this man's behavior the following action has been taken.

1. The person has been banned from Finnegan NYB and from the Goodtimers.

2. The person will not be allowed to march with any other club. As of this time, he is no longer considered a Mummer.

3. Finnegan NYB is reaching out to the LGBT community and offering its services to help with an LGBT fundraiser or equality awareness, and to learn more about LGBT concerns.

New rates for the Pennsylvania Turnpike went into effect on Sunday. The 6% rate hike affected both E-ZPass and cash customers. "A common class one or passenger vehicle rate will increase from $1.09 to $1.16 for E-ZPass customers and from $1.70 to $1.80 for cash customers," said Turnpike Spokesman Carl DeFebo. More than three-quarters of Pennsylvania Turnpike drivers use E-ZPass. Their tolls are 35% less than cash customers. Also today, the interchange at the Delaware River Bridge went to a cashless toll system. It uses E-ZPass or license plate scanners to attribute a $5 toll for westbound bridge crossings only.

As the holidays wind down and you begin to take down the decorations, what are you planning on doing with your Christmas Tree? You can always leave it up until all the needles fall off sometime in March. Maybe you plan on chopping it up for firewood. In Philadelphia, trees can be brought to one of 23 locations for recycling over the next two weeks or left out at the curb to be taken on your trash day (see list of locations far below). The Suburban counties have their own schedules for recycling and/or tree pickup. See below for some useful links and be sure to check with your local townships for any changes.
