Gov. Wolf Signs Emergency Budget Funds; DuPont to Cut 1700 DE Jobs; Lincoln Drive Multi-Car Crash

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced today that he would be using his line-item veto to reject parts of a $30.3 billion budget passed by the state legislature last week. He will sign some parts of it into law to provide emergency funding to schools, social services, and county governments who have been operating since June without a budget. Wolf will be releasing more than $23 billion. The Philadelphia School District had previously announced that without a new budget it would have to close on January 29th. With this emergency funding, Superintendent William Hite said they will be able to operate further into the school year. Wolf emphasized that this is an emergency measure and called on lawmakers to return to Harrisburg to continue work on a full budget.

DuPont has announced that it will cut 1,700 jobs in Delaware in the new year in preparation for its mega merger with Dow Chemical. The merger of the two chemical producers was announced earlier this month and will eventually be split into three independent companies. The job cuts are part of a $700 million cost savings program. Delaware governor Jack Markell called the layoffs â€œdeeply disappointing.â€ The company, which was founded in Wilmington 213 years ago, will remain in the city post merger running the new specialty products business.

Lincoln Drive was closed for hours in both directions this afternoon following a multi-car that sent 6 people to various hospitals. It happened near the Henry Ave Bridge around 12:30 pm and involved three vehicles. The road was closed between Gypsy Lane and Rittenhouse Street. Two of the injured were trapped in the wreckage and had to be extracted. There is not word on the extent of the injuries. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash. Lincoln Drive was reopened just before 5 p.m.
