SEPTA Driver Douses Passenger (video); Colwyn Fire Co Officials Charged; Fattah Jr Suit Dismissed

A SEPTA bus driver under investigation for allegedly striking a passenger last week was suspended Monday without pay. The action comes days after a video surfaced showing the driver allegedly dousing a young female passenger with water and hitting her twice in the face. The incident happened aboard a Route 57 bus about 8 a.m. Friday on Rising Sun Avenue near Duncannon Street in Olney. The incident was related to a dispute over bus fare. SEPTA police have yet to find the woman involved. They are seeking assistance identifying her, and want statements from any other witnesses to the altercation. Anyone with information is urged to contact SEPTA police at 215-580-8111.

Three top officials with the Colwyn volunteer fire company are charged with stealing more than $50,000 from their organization. Former fire chief Gary Brice, Betty Cellini, the fire company president and her daughter Lauren Cellini, who served as the fire company treasurer are all charged with theft. They are accused of writing checks to themselves without any authorization and no second signatures. Withdraws from the fire company account were allegedly used for other purposes.

Earlier this year, Chaka "Chip" Fattah Jr. sued the U.S. Justice Department, claiming it was attempting to prosecute him on bank and tax fraud charges for statements that should be protected by the First Amendment. Now, a federal judge has tossed that lawsuit, in part because Fattah failed to defend it. U.S. District Judge Harvey Bartle III dismissed the suit because Fattah, 32, failed to meet a court deadline to respond to government arguments that his claims were meritless and, by now, moot. A jury convicted the congressman's son on 22 counts last month.
