Kathryn Knott Testifies in Own Defense; 13 Arrested in South Jersey Shoplifting Ring

Kathryn Knott took the stand in her own defense this morning. She is accused of yelling homophobic slurs and punching one of the victims during a fight last year. She testified that after having dinner at a Center City restaurant with a group of friends they began to walk north on 16th Street. At one point she heard a commotion behind her and ran back and witnessed a scuffle between some of her male friends and two other men. She said she yelled for them all to stop, but did not touch anyone. The 25-year-old also explained several alleged anti-gay tweets from several years ago as being taken out of context saying one was a quote from the movie â€œAnchorman,â€ that she used the word â€œgayâ€ to mean â€œlameâ€ in another, and that she doesn't find gay people disgusting just that "I'm not a PDA person.â€ Closing arguments were completed this afternoon. The case will be referred to the jury on Wednesday.

Thirteen people have been indicted in a South Jersey shoplifting ring that netted more than $100,000 in clothing. The New Jersey Attorney General's office said the thefts happened at Marshalls and TJ Maxx stores across southern New Jersey over the past several months. The ringleaders have been identified as 29-year-old Robert Campbell of Galloway Township and his 27-year-old girlfriend Alicia Blackburne. Galloway would drive Blackburne to the store. She would take items to the bathroom room and remove the security tags before leaving the store. The pair would hand off the items to one of their accomplices who would return the items to the store for a gift card. The gift cards would be sold to a pawn shop where they'd get half the value in cash. Campbell and Blackburne were charged with second-degree crime of being the leader of an organized retail theft enterprise. All 13 are charged with second-degree conspiracy, second-degree shoplifting and third-degree shoplifting. Second-degree crimes carry a sentence of five to 10 years in state prison and a fine of up to $150,000.
