Bill Cosby Countersues 7 Women; Girl Shot in Foot Hunting Park; Pete Rose Still Banned from Baseball

Bill Cosby filed suit Monday against seven women who are suing him for defamation. The countersuit filed in U.S. District Court in Springfield, MA, claims the woman have made "malicious, opportunistic, and false and defamatory accusations" of sexual misconduct against him for financial gain. The women claim that Cosby and his representatives defamed them by calling them liars after they came forward with rape or other sexual misconduct allegations against the entertainer. Cosby has been accused by approximately 50 women of unwanted sexual contact and rape over the last year or so. Also on Monday, Boston University became the latest college to rescind an honorary degree awarded to Cosby. (see lawsuit below)

An 11-year-old girl is recovering after being shot in the foot in the Hunting Park neighborhood of Philadelphia. The girl was walking home from school when an unidentified gunman opened fire. It happened at 3:25 pm on the 700 block of W. Luzerne Street. She was struck once on the right foot. She is currently in stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. Police are looking for a man with a black skull cap on and a black shirt with a brown dragon print on the front. No weapon was recovered. The investigation continues.

Pete Rose will not be reinstated and will remain banned from baseball after MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred ruled on Rose's appeal. 74-year-old Rose formally exercised his right to appeal this past April. Manfred called for a "comprehensive review" of the case. He determined that the all-time hits leader has not "reconfigured" his life, not accepted responsibility for his actions, and doesn't avoid the behavior that led to the ban. Rose was permanently banned from the game in 1989 for violating Rule 21 for betting on baseball. While Rose says he never bet when he was a player and only bet on his own team (Cincinnati Reds) to win, evidence exists to the contrary. Rose also admitted to Manfred in interviews this past fall that he still gambles on horses and bets on baseball. The Hall of Fame said that Rose will still be ineligible for election into Cooperstown, citing bylaws that preclude those on the MLB ineligible list.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred's statement:

"Mr. Rose has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life either by an honest acceptance by him of his wrongdoing, so clearly established by the Dowd Report, or by a rigorous, self-aware and sustained program of avoidance by him of the circumstances that led to his permanent eligibility in 1989. Absent such credible evidence, allowing him to work in the game presents an unacceptable risk of a future violation by him of Rule 21, and thus to the integrity of our sport," Manfred wrote. â€œI, therefore, must reject Mr. Rose's application for reinstatement.â€
