Trump Calls Mayor Nutter a Low Life; Lifer Acquitted of Murder; More Netting at Citizens Bank Park

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump responded today on Twitter to Philadelphia Mayor Nutter's comments yesterday during a press conference addressing the desecration of North Philly mosque. The mayor called Trump an asshole and likened him to Hitler in reference to his proposal to ban all Muslims from entering the country. Trump said Nutter was a "low life" and was "doing a terrible job" and "should be ashamed for using such a disgusting word in referring to me." Nutter did immediately apologize for his language to the religious clergy at the press conference. In another tweet, Trump called Nutter a "crude dope."

A South Philadelphia man already serving a life term for murder has been acquitted by a jury of the June 2008 murder of an aspiring teacher from Minnesota. 37-year-old Marcellus Jones was charged with shooting 23-year-old Beau Zabel and stealing his iPod near the Italian Market. Zabel had just moved to Philadelphia to become a teacher. Jones was previously convicted in the September 2008 killing of 19-year-old Tyrek Taylor. Taylor was the suspected getaway driver from the first murder and was shot so he wouldn't talk about it. The prosecution did not have much, if any, physical evidence tying Jones to Zabel's murder. They relied on witnesses that testified that Jones admitted the crimes to them. The defense argued that the witnesses were unreliable and attacked their credibility stating they were all looking for deals for taking the stand. The jury only took 3 hours of deliberation to come to the not guilty verdict.

Major League Baseball is now recommending that teams have protective netting between the dugouts for field-level seats within 70 feet of home plate. This recommendation was announced today at winter meetings and follows a MLB study on fan safety. Philadelphia Chief Operating Officer Michael Stiles said that the Philies will have to extend the existing netting behind home plate at Citizens Bank Park about 10 feet on either side towards the dugouts. They are hoping to install a thinner material and 'knotless' netting that is easier to see through. The changes also apply to spring training facilities, so get a sneak peak at Bright House Field in Clearwater in a couple of months.
