PHL Bomb Threat; Golden Inn Avalon Sold; Regional Rail Tunnel Weekend Closures

A man was arrested after calling in a bomb threat to PHL airport Thursday afternoon. According to police, 911 received a call from a male stating that he had a bomb and did not want any British Airways planes flying out of PHL. The male also mentioned luggage terminal A during the call. Multiple airport units and bomb squads did a walkthrough of the airport terminal the caller said he was in. Police say a 30-year-old man from Norway was found and apprehended.

The Golden Inn in Avalon was sold Thursday to a Chester-based hotel-management company that plans to transform the family beachside resort into luxury lodgings. Icona Resorts declined to discuss the purchase price for the 155-guest-room property, but spokeswoman Molly Mita said it was the biggest hotel transaction in Cape May County history. The company will spend "tens of millions" on renovations, to be completed by development affiliate Achristavest by July 2016, Mita said. Icona renovated Diamond Beach's Pier 6600 into Icona Diamond Beach in 2013. Achristavest also built Phillies part-owner John Middleton's Avalon home and a house for FedEx founder Frederick Smith in Park City, Utah, Mita said.

A wire-replacement project and other maintenance work will close the Regional Rail tunnel between the University City and 30th Street stations this weekend. The tunnel closure is needed to make emergency repairs to overhead wires. While the tunnel is shut down for that work, crews will also clean trash, remove graffiti and vegetation, trim trees, replace a track section and test Positive Train Control equipment.

Here is how service on the Regional Rail lines that pass through the tunnel will be affected:

Airport Line: Shuttle buses will replace trains between 30th Street Station and the airport terminals. The buses, which will stop at the University City and Eastwick stations, will pick up and drop off passengers at 30th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard.

Media/Elwyn Line: Express and local shuttle buses will replace trains. Riders who connect to the line from Chestnut Hill East should leave 30th Street Station to transfer to the shuttle buses at 30th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard.

Wilmington/Newark Line: Trains will operate as scheduled, but passengers must transfer at 30th Street Station to continue to Norristown on the Manayunk/Norristown Line.
