76ers End Losing Streak, PA Sales Tax Exemptions, Salvation Army Building Collapse Memorial

The Philadelphia 76ers have ended the longest losing streak in the history of major professional sports in theUnited States, topping the Los Angeles Lakers 103-91 on Tuesday night to snap a 28-game skid. The Sixers had lost their first 18 games this season, matching the record for worst start in NBA history. They had dropped 28 straight dating to last season, setting the mark for longest losing streak among the four major U.S. sports leagues. The Sixers won for the first time since March 25, 2015. Lakers star Kobe Bryant scored 20 points on 7-of-26 shooting inthe final game of his career in his hometown.

Details of a budget deal remained fluid yesterday as legislative leaders and Governor Wolf try to end Pennsylvaniaâ€™s five month-old budget stalemate. And now it appears that eliminating some exemptions to the state sales tax is now in play as a possible way to raise new revenue. For now, a plan to raise the sales tax rate has been put aside. Instead, legislative leaders and the governor are looking at possibly extending the sales tax to some items currently not taxed. Sales tax exemptions for food and clothing would not be affected. But sales tax exemptions could be eliminated for amusement parks and recreational businesses such as campgrounds and bowling alleys.

Organizers looking to build a memorial for the six people who lost their lives in the 2013 Salvation Army building collapse in Philadelphia are close to raising enough money to construct the project. The memorial park will reside on 22nd and Market, the same grounds where the collapse took place. Jerry Sweeney, from the 22nd and Market Memorial Committee says theyâ€™ve raised $1.1 million for the cause and they hope to break ground on the memorial park on June 5th, 2016â€¦the three-year anniversary of the collapse.
