PA State Trooper Injured in 676 Chase/Shootout; Adele 25 Breaks Record; Upper Dublin Discrimination

A Pennsylvania State Trooper was shot and injured this morning during a shootout and chase on I-676 that ended in a fiery crash. It started when two troopers pulled over a vehicle for expired tags on I-76 westbound near University Ave around 10 am. The four male occupants were told to get out. After one 19-year-old was handcuffed and placed in the cruiser, a 17-year-old jumped back into the car and sped away. Trooper Patrick Casey had arrived as back up and began the pursuit that led onto I-676. During the chase the trooper attempted to box the suspect's car out. The suspect pulled along side Casey and began to fire at the trooper. The suspect then slammed into the back of a school bus, igniting the two vehicles near 22nd Street. Only the driver of the bus was inside and got out unharmed. The suspect continued to fire at Casey's car who was hit in the shoulder. Casey fired back. Backup arrived and the shooter was apprehended after a foot chase. Casey was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in stable condition. The other two occupants of the car from the initial stop are still at large. The identities of the suspects have not been released.

Adele's latest 25 is already in the record books after just 3 days of sales. According to Billboard, it has sold 2.43 million copies so far. That beats out 2000's No Strings Attached by N*Sync which sold 2.41 million copies in its first week. 25 is not done yet, there are still 4 more days of sales left. Initial estimates put the final numbers at 2.5 million, put prognosticators are calling it 2.9 now. Sales of the highly anticipated album were certainly amplified by the fact that you couldn't stream the music upon release, you had to buy it to hear it. The final sales number of the week will be tallied by Sunday.

A group of parents of Upper Dublin students have accused the school district of racial discrimination. The complaint was filed by the Concerned African American Parents with the U.S. Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. They say that the schools are disproportionately suspending black students as well as placing them in lower level classes or excluding them from higher level classes. CAAP points out that while black students make up 7.3% of the Upper Dublin School District, they received 45% of out-of-school suspensions last year. The school district plans to make a thorough review of the complaint. They issued this statement:

The School District of Upper Dublin has been advised of a complaint filed against the District by the Concerned African American Parents. The Districtâ€™s Solicitor received the document filed by the group at 4:00 P.M. this evening, and it was delivered to the District administration. The document is lengthy and we plan to review it thoroughly and carefully. Following this review we will issue a response.

The School Districtâ€™s mission is to provide a safe, supportive environment for all students to become lifelong learners and contributing members of a changing society. To this end, the District is fully committed to providing excellence and equity in education to all students.
