Drunk Driver Slams Police Cruiser on I-95, SEPTA Route 23 Changes, Grove Street Reopens This Week

A suspected drunk driver slammed into the back of a police cruiser on I-95 early Monday morning in Northeast Philadelphia. It happened around 2:20 a.m. in the southbound lanes between the Cottman Street and Bridge Street exits. Authorities say Philadelphia police were assisting state police with a previous accident when a man driving a black SUV rear-ended a patrol car. There were no officers inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. The driver of the SUV was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in unknown condition. The three left lanes were blocked for more than two hours as a result of the accident.

SEPTAâ€™s busiest bus route through Philadelphia was split in two on Sunday. The Route 23 bus currently runs from Chestnut Hill to South Philadelphia, but yesterday that changed. Dan Nemiroff is a Senior Operations Planner with SEPTA, and he says there will be a new Route 23 bus. â€œIt will travel from Chestnut Hill to Center City via Germantown and 12th (Street), and it will turn on Locust Street,â€ Nemiroff says. â€œAnd then it will turn back up 11th (Street) and layover on 11th between Market and Filbert (Streets).â€ Nemiroff says the new Route 45 bus will take over the rest of the route. â€œTraveling from Broad and Oregon (Streets), up 11th (Street), and then it will turn onto Noble Street which is a block above Callowhill,â€ he says, â€œand itâ€™ll layover on Noble towards 12th (Street), and then it will resume southbound service on 12th (Street).â€ There will be a free transfer zone between Callowhill and Market Streets, but riders will need to get their transfers from bus drivers before getting off the first bus on their commute.

Normally people are pleased to see road construction work come to an end, particularly on a residential street. Thatâ€™s not necessarily the case in one Camden County town. Sometime this week Grove Street in Haddonfield will reopen to traffic. Repaving work since summer has closed the road on and off between Route 70 and Kings Highway. And a sewer project before that was a major pain. Youâ€™d think people living along the street would be glad to hear theyâ€™ll be getting their road back. But truth be told, itâ€™s sort of a mixed blessing. Traffic on Grove Street has been detoured onto other nearby streets off and on this summer. Chances are those residents will more than likely be thrilled to get all those cars back where theyâ€™re supposed to be.
