AAA Thanksgiving Travel Info, Source4Teachers Falls Short, Philadelphia Marathon Security

It looks like the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday may be one of the busiest travel periods in recent years. AAA Mid-Atlantic is expecting more than 500,000 people to hit the roads in the region starting next Tuesday, and traveling an average of 50 miles to visit relatives for the Thanksgiving holiday. 90% of those traveling for the holiday will go by car enjoying the lowest gas prices for the holiday since 2008. The airport will also be busy with nearly 45,000 expected to fly to get to their holiday destinations, and Amtrak’s getting ready to move about 750,000 passengers- a record for the Thanksgiving travel period. And, expect a heavy security presence at both Philadelphia International Airport and 30th Street Station.

Superintendent William Hite says he’ll ask the School Reform Commission to modify its contract with a company that has fallen short in its promise to provide substitute teachers. The company, called Source4Teachers of Cherry Hill, promised to fill 90% of the Philadelphia School District’s substitute teaching jobs. But the firm hasn’t come close. A district spokesman says Monday’s “fill rate” was 27%. Now, Hite says he’ll ask the School Reform Commission to modify its two-year, $34 million contract with the firm.

Authorities on Tuesday sought to assure Philadelphia Marathon runners and spectators that this Sunday’s race will be safe and well-guarded. Security has been beefed up since the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013. Mayor Nutter said the Homeland Security Secretary assured him there’s no threat to Philadelphia, but he understands there may still be concerns. Mayor Nutter said barriers will be up around the Parkway from 18th to 25th Streets and that all bags will be inspected at the gates. One new thing this year, entries will open at 5 a.m.– a half hour earlier– so runners have time to get through security.
