Spruce and Callowhill Two Way Streets, Walmart 15 Day Fast, Rothman Ice Rink Opens Today

Philadelphia drivers will soon have more places to turn off of Columbus Boulevard. Two one-way streets, Spruce and Callowhill, are becoming two-way streets near Columbus Boulevard starting November 23. It's a project spearheaded by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation. Vice President for Operations and Development Joe Forkin says the added waterfront access is a precursor to one day tearing down the "scissor ramps" connecting Columbus Boulevard to Market and Chestnut Streets to clear the way for possible new Penn's Landing development. Work on the $1.3 million project funded by the DRWC has been going on since summer.

A 15-day fast has begun by about a thousand Walmart workers nationwide. They are calling attention to the need for a $15 minimum wage at the nation's largest grocery supplier. This is part of the groups "$15 and Full-Time" campaign to draw attention to working conditions at Walmart. Walmart says its workers make $9 an hour. The corporation says it will continue to focus on increased wages, education and training for its associates. The fast will end on Black Friday.

The Rothman Ice Rink at Dilworth Park reopens for a second season at noon Friday. There are new amenities this year. The ice rink itself is more rectangular than last yearâ€™s oblong shape. Also new, sled skating, starting in January. Also a 'Made in Philadelphia' holiday market will be introduced beginning November 21st. You can rent skates and take lessons too.
