| ChesCo Boys Charged Sexting Ring; Philly Students Protest Tuition/Debt; Drexel Revokes Cosby Degree |

Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan announced today that four Treddyfrin-Easttown Middle School boys have been charged in a sexting and bullying ring. It began last year when a middle school boy persuaded his middle school girlfriend to send him partially clothed pictures of herself. After the couple broke up he shared the pictures with his friends who proceeded to cyberbully and real world bully her. Hogan said they did everything, “To make a young girl’s life miserable. They isolated her, they made fun of her, they did everything they could to make her life hell on earth.†Parents need to be aware that kids can hide pictures on their phones in “vault apps†that make them hard to find. Three of the boys charged participated in this incident; the fourth was discovered separately as part of the investigation. Charges range from sexting, to harassment, to illegal use of a communications facility, to transmission of obscene materials.
Students from Drexel, the University of Pennsylvania, Temple, the Community College of Philadelphia, and some area high schools participated in today's national Million Student March. Some marched south on Broad Street from Temple's campus. Another crowd marched east from 30th Street Station. They all converged at Dillworth Park next to City Hall around 4:30 p.m. The group was calling for tuition-free public college, the cancellation of all student debt, and a $15 minimum wage for campus workers. There was also calls for diversity and racial awareness due to recent student protests at Yale and Mizzou.
Drexel University announced that it has revoked a honorary degree it bestowed upon Bill Cosby in 1992. Drexel President John A. Fry said in a statement that the misconduct that came to light in Cosby's sworn deposition testimony is in clear opposition to Drexel's values. Brown, Fordham, Marquette, Tufts, the University of San Francisco, Baylor, Lehigh, Wilkes Universities, Goucher, Muhlenberg, and Franklin and Marshall Colleges all have rescinded honorary degrees. Here in Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania and his alma mater Temple have not. Cosby has not been charged with any crime and denies all allegations.
Here is Fry's full statement:
The misconduct by Bill Cosby that came to light through his sworn deposition testimony stands in clear opposition to Drexel’s values. As a result, the University has revoked the honorary Drexel degree bestowed upon Mr. Cosby in 1992. I have made this decision in consultation with the Executive Committee of Drexel’s Board of Trustees.
Universities are critical arenas in the movement to recognize and address sexual violence and misconduct as a societal problem. Drexel takes that responsibility very seriously, and the decision to revoke Mr. Cosby’s honorary degree flows from that responsibility.
