PA Poker Player Wins World Series; NY AG Orders DraftKings and FanDuel to Stop; New Trail Opens

The World Series of Poker is in the books and we have a winner. Joe McKeehen, of North Wales, Montgomery County, held off challenges from his final two opponents Tuesday night in Las Vegas and won the $7.68 million first prize and the World Series of Poker championship title. Josh Beckley, 24, of Evesham Township, Burlington County, was second, and Neil Blumenfield, 61, of San Francisco, finished third. The second-place finisher earned $4.47 million and third place $3.39 million. McKeehen, 24, who graduated from Arcadia University with a degree in mathematics, went into the final round with a huge lead of 67 percent of all the chips on the table.

The attorney general in New York has told the daily fantasy sports companies DraftKings and FanDuel to stop taking players in New York on the grounds that their operations amount to illegal gambling. Thatâ€™s according to the Associated Press. Yesterday, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sent letters to both saying their contests are promoted like a lottery and are essentially games of chance, not skill. He accused the companies of being "leaders of a massive, multi-billion-dollar scheme intended to evade the law and fleece sports fans across the country." FanDuel said in a statement that its games are legal and Schneiderman is just out for press attention. DraftKings had no comment.

A new 2.2-mile multiuse trail has opened in Upper Merion Township, connecting Heuser Park to Valley Forge National Historical Park. The trail extension officially opened last week as part of the 15.5-mile Schuylkill River West Trail, connecting Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties through Lower Merion, West Conshohocken, Bridgeport, and Upper Merion. Upper Merion's portion of the trail begins in Heuser Park and continues to outside Valley Forge, near the U.S. 422 bridge over the Schuylkill. Plans for the trail began in 2007 when Upper Merion officials started a feasibility study. Work began last year and was completed in October.
