After weeks of testimony and days of deliberation, a federal jury found the son of a Philadelphia congressman, Chaka "Chip" Fattah Jr., guilty on 22 of 23 counts. He was accused of making false statements to banks to obtain loans and settle loans for less, filling false tax returns, failing to pay taxes, and stealing from the Philadelphia School District. He used the money to fund a lavish lifestyle including cars, jewelry, restaurants/clubs, gambling debts, and personal credit card expenses instead of the business expenses the loans were issued. Fattah represented himself throughout the trial and says the U.S. attorney is mistaken and his various businesses made over a million dollars in the past ten years. He was found not guilty of one count of filing false tax returns in 2009.
The woman who kept mentally disabled adults captive in her Tacony "basement of horrors" was sentenced today to life in prison plus 80 years. 55-year-old Linda Preston pled guilty in September to 196 counts including racketeering conspiracy, kidnapping resulting in the death of the victim, forced human labor, involuntary servitude, multiple counts of murder in aid of racketeering, hate crime, violent crime in aid of racketeering, sex trafficking, kidnapping, theft of government funds, wire fraud, mail fraud, use of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and false statements. The plea deal took the death penalty off the table. Weston and four others held mentally handicapped adults in the basement of their Philadelphia home and collected their benefits checks. A landlord discovered four adults locked in a boiler room in 2011, one was chained up. The group had been active from 2001 in Texas, Virginia and Florida.
The body of a girl pulled from the Delaware River yesterday has been identified as 14-year-old Pamela Flores. The discovery was made near the Linden Avenue boat ramp in the city's Torresdale section Wednesday morning. Flores went missing on her way to Frankford High School on October 27th. Her backpack and cell phone were found near the Tacony Palmyra Bridge about 3 miles from school. Surveillance video showed someone possibly falling or jumping from the bridge. Divers searched the area but did not find anything. The coroner's office says that the cause of the death was drowning and the manner of death was suicide.
