Kenney Wins Mayoral Election, $10000 Winning Voter, Dems Win PA Supreme Court Open Seats

Former longtime Councilman Jim Kenney was elected mayor on Tuesday on a promise to push for universal prekindergarten education and step up efforts to fight poverty by building an economy "for all of Philadelphia." Kenney, a Democrat, overwhelmed his Republican challenger, business executive Melissa Murray Bailey, in a city that hasn't had a GOP mayor since 1952 and where the primary is considered the more important election. He will take office in January, replacing Democrat Michael Nutter, who was limited to two four-year terms.

One lucky Philadelphian got a windfall Tuesday night just for casting a ballot. It was part of an effort to boost low voter participation in the city. Bridget Conroy-Varnis, a Philadelphia school crossing guard, was the lucky voter winning $10,000. Sheâ€™d heard about the contest. All she had to do to win was just for casting her ballot at a randomly select polling place, 4th and Shunk, at a randomly selected time of 6:36 p.m. Larry Platt is co-founder of The Philadelphia Citizen, who presented the check, says non-partisan voter lotteries are only legal in state elections, so for the presidential election theyâ€™ll come up with another â€œcreativeâ€ plan.

Philadelphia Judge Kevin Dougherty and Superior Court Judges David Wecht and Christine Donohue pulled off a Democratic sweep, winning all three open seats on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, sealing a Democratic majority on the high court for years to come. Franklin and Marshall College pollster and political analyst Terry Madonna says Democrats will have the majority in what he believes is likely to be a more partisan Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Madonna believes the Democratsâ€™ success in the Supreme Court races is the result of better organization and more money for campaign advertising.
