Strawberry Mansion Shooting, Election Day Tomorrow, Fred Thompson Passes at 73

A teenage boy is dead after more than a dozen shots were fired at him and another teen today Sunday in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia. It happened around 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2200 block of Sedgley Avenue.
Police say a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy were riding their bikes there when two men in a sedan pulled up, got out of their car, and began shooting. Patrol officers nearby heard the commotion and responded to the neighborhood and found the 16-year-old lying in the street. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police say the gunmen fired 17 shots before driving off.

Philadelphia’s Democratic leaders are feeling the downside of ruling a one-party town. Turnout for the general election is expected to be so low that it could hurt their candidate’s chances in the statewide judicial election on Tuesday. Democrats have a shot at becoming the majority party on the supreme court and Philadelphia party leaders are especially interested in seeing family court judge Kevin Dougherty elected. But that would require a large turnout in the city, and with the mayoral election considered a foregone conclusion, they fear many voters will stay home.

Fred Thompson, a folksy former Republican U.S. senator from Tennessee who appeared in feature films and television including a role on “Law & Order,” died Sunday, his family said. Thompson, appeared in at least 20 motion pictures. His credits include “In the Line of Fire,” ”The Hunt for Red October,” ”Die Hard II” and “Cape Fear.” The family statement said Thompson died Sunday in Nashville following a recurrence of lymphoma. Fred Thompson was 73.
