A memorial to the victims of gun homicides in Philadelphia last year has been erected at the corner of 37th and Chestnut Streets in front of Tabernacle Church in University City. It's called a "Memorial to the Lost" and it's the work of a group of faith-based organizations operating under the leadership of an organization called Heeding God's Call to End Gun Violence. There are 206 T-shirts each with marked with the name, age and date of death of a homicide victim. The T-shirts are hanging on a series of temporary pipes lining the property to remind us that for every life that’s lost there’s a family that’s grieving, a community that’s affected.

This Sunday is the Day of The Dead, a traditional Mexican holiday where people pay respect to loved ones and family members who have died. There is a Day of the Dead celebration taking place at the Penn Museum this Saturday. The centerpiece for The Day of the Dead celebration is an altar that’s more than 12-feet high and is decorated with 700 paper flowers, an array of candles and flamboyantly dressed skeletons. Saturday’s festivities include music, traditional bread called pana muertos, and traditional mexican hot chocolate. Last year, they had upwards of 1,000 people come to the celebration and they’re expecting even more this year.

Narcan has proven to be a literal life saver to those knocking on death’s door after a heroin overdose. Delaware County honored police who have used the drug to bring addicted people back. Three years ago, the county formed a heroin task force to combat the problem. In September of last year, officers started carrying Narcan. So far, 135 lives have been saved in the county because police administered it in time. There’s now talk of establishing a follow-up treatment program for those who are saved by Narcan. Delaware County’s also set up drop off boxes for disposal of prescription drugs no longer needed at every police station.
