Upper Moreland Police Brutality, PA Tax Increase Unlikely, PA Supreme Court Election

Upper Moreland police are being sued by a man who was dragged off a SEPTA bus and tasered repeatedly in the parking lot of a Willow Grove convenience store. The civil lawsuit alleges violation of constitutional rights, false arrest, false imprisonment, assault and battery at the hands of Upper Moreland police sergeant Peter Ruddell and Officer Matthew Snyder. It happened in October 2013, Jeremiah Kendrick was on his way to work when a SEPTA bus driver yelled at him to turn his music down. Kendrick's attorney, Thomas Malone, says his client was wearing earbuds and it wasn't his music. But he says when police arrived, they shouted and cursed at his client, threw him off the bus and used a taser on him twice as he was on the ground outside the bus. Criminal charges against Kendrick were dropped when video from inside the bus contradicted police testimony. Upper Moreland police declined comment. The Montgomery county DA’s office says the incident remains under review

One of Governor Wolf’s top allies in the legislature says it’s unlikely that the governor is going to get the broad-based tax increases he’s holding out for. Pennsylvania has been without a budget for almost four months. Earlier this month, nine Democrats joined with the Republican majority in the House to vote down Governor Wolf’s proposal to raise the personal income tax. At a press club appearance Monday, the top Democrat in the Senate, minority leader Jay Costa of Allegheny County, said support for Wolf’s proposal isn’t in the Senate cards, either. Costa says he believes majority Republicans in the Senate are sincere when they say they do not have the votes for broad-based taxes in their caucus… and he says his focus now is on finding other revenue sources.

Election Day is one week from today and it could be one of Pennsylvania’s most historic judicial elections in three centuries. It’s been more than 300 years since the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has had three open seats, making the November 3rd election one of the most historic in Philadelphia history. But it’s also one of the most competitive, with three democrats, three republicans and an independent vying for a seat on the high court bench. Recent finance reports show that $10 million has been pumped into the race, making it one of the most expensive state Supreme Court races ever in Pennsylvania. The new court will decide how voting districts are drawn and could rule on whether fair education funding is a constitutional right.
