Two Plead Guilty in CC Gay Beating; MontCo Candidate Won't Sign Licenses; North Star Bar Closing

Two Bucks County men have pled guilty in the beating of a gay couple in Center City last September and avoided jail time. 24-year-old Philip Williams pled guilty to aggravated assault and conspiracy and received 5 years probation. 26-year-old Kevin Harrigan pled guilty to simple assault and conspiracy and received 3 years probation. Both will have to perform 200 hours of community service at a LGBT-related organization. They will not be able to enter Center City during their probation. The other defendant, 25-year-old Kathryn Knott, will go to trial. She maintains her innocence and is willing to risk prison. The attack near 16th and Chancellor streets left one victim with a broken jaw that was wired shut. The victims asked for the plea deals, they did not want to go to trial says Assistant DA Michael Barry.

The Republican candidate for Register of Wills in Montgomery County has said that she will not sign off on marriage certificates for same sex couples if elected due to her religious beliefs. Sharon Valentine-Thomas, who is currently the mayor of Pottstown, is challenging Democratic incumbent D. Bruce Hanes. Hanes gained notoriety himself two years ago by beginning to issue same sex marriage licenses before they were legal in the state saying the law violated the consitution. Valentine-Thomas says that although her conscience would not allow her to sign the documents, she would seek an accommodation from the court to have a deputy authorize the licenses.

The North Star Bar in the Fairmount neighborhood has been a live music landmark since 1981. Hosting touring acts and local bands alike, the venue has been a stepping stone for many bands on their way to greater success. Many fans have memories of seeing a band play at the North Star back in the day and before they were big. In a surprise announcement on the venue's website today, they will be closing their doors after Saturday, October 17th for renovations. When it reopens they will have a "new name, even better food, 'more better' beer and lots of cool fun stuff." but most importantly no more live music. It goes on to thank the fans, regulars, bands, and promoters for all the support. Philadelphia has seen a few venues close the past few years like Abilene's, The Kyber, and The Blockley but just as many open like Boot and Saddle, Union Transfer, Fillmore, the Foundry. The North Star Bar will be open through Saturday night, then resurrect as a hip restaurant sometime in the future.
